Canyonlands National Park marks 50 years

Canyonlands National Park in Utah is marking its 50th anniversary Sept. 12.

By Jay Bigalke

The stunning vistas that make up Canyonlands National Park will be celebrated Sept. 12, the 50th anniversary of the park joining the National Park System.

The Moab, Utah, post office created a pictorial postmark using the 50th anniversary logo, which features some of the park’s many rock formations.

The words “inspiration,” “solitude” and “adventure” are included on the bottom of the postmark.

“In order to preserve an area in the State of Utah possessing superlative scenic, scientific, and archeologic features for the inspiration, benefit, and use of the public, there is hereby established the Canyonlands National Park … ,” states legislation signed Sept. 12, 1964, by President Lyndon B. Johnson, establishing the park.
