Kelleher and Rogers Oct. 15-16 auction to offer classic China, PRC, Thailand, more
By Charles Snee
Kelleher and Rogers Ltd., a division of Daniel F. Kelleher Auctions, will offer stamps of classic China, the People’s Republic of China, Thailand and other Asian countries during an auction to be held Oct. 15-16 at the Kelleher Auctions gallery in Danbury, Conn.
Each day of the sale will begin at 9 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
According to Kelleher and Rogers, the two-day sale “has a spring in its step, with over 800 lots on offer. Covering all periods and areas of China philately, plus a lovely array of material from across Asia, there is something here for all collectors and dealers.”
“Singles highlights include several exquisite dollar-value Coiling Dragon and Hall of Classics issues (the latter including plate and imprint blocks), several ‘Provisional Neutrality’ items, an unissued 10c Map of China commemorative, a 4c Junk Experimental Printing, PRC sets in rarely seen blocks of four and an unfolded Monkey sheet of 80, multiple Taiwan Flying Geese sets, outstanding Hong Kong sets, exceptional sen- and mon-value Japan Dragons, attractive Thailand sets and singles, and much more besides,” Kelleher and Rogers said. “The sale also offers a particularly strong array of Collections, ranging from specialized single-issue studies to high-quality country holdings to strong dealer stocks, offering both stamps and postal history.”
An impressive item among the offerings of 1912-38 China will cross the auction block on Oct. 15: a mint, never-hinged bottom margin imprint and plate number block of six of the 1915 $10 yellow green and black Hall of Classics (Scott 239).
The stamp is the top denomination of the 1915 set of 19 (Scott 221-239) from the First Peking printing.
Kelleher and Rogers describes the plate block as “a simply magnificent positional, with dazzling colors as fresh as the day they were printed; pristine and exceptionally well centered.”
In unused condition, the 1915 $10 yellow green and black Hall of Classics stamp is valued at $1,100 in the Scott Classic Specialized Catalogue of Stamps and Covers 1840-1940.
Kelleher and Rogers estimates this eye-catching plate block of six of the $10 Hall of Classics at HK$26,000 to HK$30,000 (approximately US$3,340 to US$3,855 in late September) and lists it with an opening bid of HK$13,000 (US$1,670).
Kelleher and Rogers has prepared a catalog for the two-day sale of stamps from classic China, the People’s Republic of China, Thailand and other Asian countries that is available for viewing and download on the firm’s website, www.kelleherauctions.com. Online bidding options are available on Stamp Auction Network.
