More than $231,000 in postage stamps stolen in Sydney

A man has been charged with stealing more than $300,000 Australian (about $231,941 U.S.) worth of postage stamps from post offices across Sydney, Australia, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

The 42-year-old suspect, charged with 21 counts of aggravated break, enter and steal, is believed to be one of two men who committed thefts at 23 post offices between March 2013 and December 2014. 

He was taken into custody during a Dec. 29, 2014, break-in at Five Dock Post Office, the Morning Herald repots. The second man managed to evade police.

Detectives have described the targeted theft of postage stamps as "unique". A regular stamp costs 70¢, while a box of 200 costs $140. The most expensive stamp for an overseas letter is $16.50.

During a public appeal for information last month, Acting Sergeant Kath Griffin said it was unclear what the thieves planned to do with the stamps.

"That's the $300,000 question," she said.

The thieves also stole mobile phones, sim cards and cash.
