Great Britain’s Royal Mail will raise its first-class and second-class domestic postage rates April 7.

The cost for first-class postage will climb 5 pence, from £1.65 to £1.70. The second-class rate will increase 2p, from 85p to 87p.

“Royal Mail carefully considers prices, balancing affordability with the increasing cost of delivering mail,” a March 7 press release from Royal Mail said.

Royal Mail’s chief commercial officer Nick Landon said “the cost of delivering mail continues to increase” and reform is needed to protect universal service and allow for “a more financially sustainable service.”

“Letter volumes have fallen from 20 billion a year in 2004/5 to 6.7 billion in 2023/4, and could fall to 4 billion a year within the next four years,” the press release said.

Royal Mail announced other price changes as well, including an increase of 40p on the international standard rate, from £2.80 to £3.20.
