USPS plans temporary price increases for 2024 holiday mailing season
By Linn’s Staff
The United States Postal Service plans to implement temporary rate increases for the 2024 holiday mailing season.
The Postal Service filed a notice Sept. 5 with the Postal Regulatory Commission seeking temporary price changes for some package services.
“This temporary price adjustment is to help cover extra handling costs to ensure a successful peak season,” the USPS said in a Sept. 5 press release.
On Aug. 8 the Postal Service’s board of governors approved the planned price hikes, which will affect Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail and USPS Ground Advantage. No additional products or services would be affected, the USPS said.
If approved by the Postal Regulatory Commission, the temporary rate increases would go into effect at 12 a.m. Central Time on Oct. 6 and remain in place until 12 a.m. Central Time on Jan. 19, 2025.
The rates are based on the weight of the package and the zone of the address to which it is sent.
“This seasonal adjustment will bring prices for the Postal Service’s commercial and retail customers in line with competitive practices,” the Postal Service said.
“As a strategic part of the Delivering for America 10-year plan, these temporary changes will support the Postal Service in creating a revitalized organization capable of achieving our public service mission … in a cost-effective and financially sustainable manner over the long term, just as the U.S. Congress has intended,” according to the USPS.
The price change tables can be viewed on the Postal Explorer website.
