Batman stamp issue to debut Oct. 9 in New York City

A new United States stamp issue celebrating the 75th anniversary of comic book crime fighter Batman will be issued Oct. 9 in New York City.

Additional details on the stamp issue were unavailable from the U.S. Postal Service.

The stamp’s issue date coincides with the first day of the annual New York Comic Con convention, which is taking place Oct. 9 through Oct. 12 at the Jacob Javits Center.

The Batman issue, though reported previously by Linn’s, has not been formally announced by the Postal Service.

However, the issue was confirmed Sept. 17 with a listing on the events calendar at USPS.com: “Batman (49¢ Forever), October 9 — Jacob Javits Center, New York, NY, 11 a.m.”

Linn’s first reported the possibility of a Batman stamp issue in the Feb. 24 issue. The story by Bill McAllister cited a Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee briefing sheet discussing the early stages of the issue.

The Batman character, created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, first appeared in Detective Comics No. 27 in May 1939.

Batman was featured on two U.S. 39¢ stamps in 2006 as part of the DC Comics Superheroes set.
