FedEx board member Steiner likely to become Postal Service’s next postmaster general

Various media outlets reported in early May that the United States Postal Service’s board of governors plans to appoint David Steiner as the next postmaster general.
Steiner, the former CEO of Waste Management, serves as a board member for FedEx, a major competitor to the Postal Service in the package delivery sector.
The board of governors is scheduled to meet May 9, but there is no mention of a vote for a new postmaster general on the official agenda.
According to a May 6 story from the Washington Post, President Donald Trump approved the selection of Steiner to lead the USPS.
News of Steiner’s selection quickly came under fire from Brian Renfroe, president the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Renfroe characterized the move as “an aggressive step toward handing America’s mail system over to corporate interests.”
“Private shippers have been waiting to get USPS out of parcel delivery for years. Steiner’s selection is an open invitation to do just that,” Renfroe said. “At a time when collaboration with workers helped USPS turn a $144 million profit in the last quarter of 2024, this decision flies in the face of everything that’s working.”
If approved by the board of governors, Steiner would replace Louis DeJoy, who resigned as postmaster general on March 24.Connect with Linn’s Stamp News:
