May 24-26 Rocky Mountain Stamp Show highlights native plants

The Rocky Mountain Stamp Show, sponsored by the nonprofit Rocky Mountain Philatelic Exhibitions Inc., has selected native plants of Colorado as the theme for its 73rd show.

The event will occur May 24-26 at the same location as last year, the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds, 25690 E. Quincy Ave., Aurora, Colo.

Show hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission and parking are free.

The show will feature at least 32 dealers and up to 400 frames of exhibits. In accordance with the show theme, representatives of the Colorado Native Plant Society and the Colorado Cactus and Succulent Society will be on site to share their knowledge.

The George Brett Cup, which honors an exhibit of 20th-century material, will be awarded by the American Association of Philatelic Exhibitors.

This is the seventh year the Rocky Mountain show has been selected to host the competition for the cup. To qualify, an exhibit must have earned a grand or reserve grand award at a stamp show during the previous three years.

The Rocky Mountain Stamp Show is an American Philatelic Society World Series of Philately show, therefore the multiframe grand award winner is eligible for the Champion of Champions competition at the Great American Stamp Show in Hartford, Conn., Aug. 15-18.

The Rocky Mountain show will also include a noncompetitive exhibit evaluation, which will give beginners the opportunity to exhibit for the purpose of evaluation by a team of experienced exhibitors and American Philatelic Society certified judges.

The intent of this special category is to provide suggestions for improvement and refinement of an exhibitor’s work prior to entry as a competitive exhibit at the World Series of Philately level.

No awards will be presented for exhibits in this category. However, each participant will receive written feedback in a standard exhibits evaluation form and will be recognized at the awards banquet.

Societies in attendance at the Rocky Mountain Stamp Show will include the APS Writers Unit No. 30, Colorado Postal History Society, International Society for Portuguese Philately and the United Postal Stationery Society.

On each day of the show, there will be a “What’s in Your Attic?” table, where collectors will provide free, no-obligation evaluations of stamp collections. This is an opportunity for those who have inherited collections and others to learn about their holdings and philatelic terminology.

The show also will feature a Boy Scout stamp collecting merit badge workshop on Sunday at 10 a.m. Seating is limited to 12, and registration is required.

Other youth activities include Wide World of Sports, Passports to Adventure, Wildlife Safari, Greetings from America, design-a-stamp and treasure tubs.

The Rocky Mountain Philatelic Library auction will run throughout the weekend, concluding on Sunday. Various philatelic items will be available to bid on. More information can be found on the library’s website.
