National Park Service offers John Lewis postmark

The United States National Park Service sponsored a postmark honoring civil rights activist John Lewis.

Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr., Lewis (1940-2020) dedicated his life to fighting for racial equality. He led many demonstrations and endured unspeakable violence. Yet, he persisted.

Lewis served more than 30 years in Congress and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama in 2011.

The revered leader is the subject of a U.S. forever commemorative stamp issued July 21, the 47th stamp in the Black Heritage series.

The National Park Service and the Black Women’s Leadership Caucus Inc., held a dedication of the John Lewis stamp on Sept. 19 at the African Burial Ground National Monument in Lower Manhattan in New York City.

The event included keynote speaker the Rev. Al Sharpton, the U.S. Postal Service Color Guard, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, and vocalist Jasmine Muhammad.
