According to results of an annual poll conducted by Motivgruppe Musik, the International Philatelic Music Group, the top music stamp issue of 2024 was a Sweden stamp commemorating 50 years since ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest with their song “Waterloo.”

Sweden issued the nondenominated 50 years of Waterloo stamps April 6, 2024. Swedish designer Eva Wilsson designed the stamp and will be awarded the Yehudi Menuhin trophy.

In the press release announcing the contest winners, Motivgruppe Musik said ABBA’s Eurovision victory on April 6, 1974, not only marked the beginning of the group’s career, but also shaped a 1970’s music market dominated by American and British bands.

According to Motivgruppe Musik, stamps from 66 postal administrations competed in the stamp poll, and collectors from 46 countries participated in the online vote.

The 50 years of Waterloo stamp received 7.33 percent of the total votes in the poll.

Coming in second with 6.41 percent of the total votes was a Nov. 5, 2024, Spanish stamp with a design featuring a cellist from a mural on a building in Fene, Spain. Graffiti artist Sfhir won first prize for the mural at the Perla Mural Festival in 2023.

A Norway stamp commemorating the town of Bodo, a 2024 European Capital of Culture, took third place in the contest with 6.09 percent of the vote. The stamp issued Feb. 5, 2024, was designed by photographer and designer Kristin Slotteroy.

Motivgruppe Musik has conducted an annual poll to determine the most popular music stamp of the year since 1980. The trophy is awarded in memory of violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin (1916-99), who was the patron of the Philatelic Music Circle from 1969 until his death.

Motivgruppe Musik was founded in 1959. Affiliated with the American Topical Association and the German Philatelic Society, it has approximately 250 members in 36 countries. For information, visit its website www.motivgruppe-musik.com.
