Two societies make additional contributions to Boston 2026
By Linn’s Staff
The American First Day Cover Society and the German Philatelic Society have each made additional contributions to the Boston 2026 World Expo.
On Oct. 13 Boston 2026 public relations chair Thomas Fortunato announced that the AFDCS made a second $5,000 donation to the Boston 2026 show.
This follows an initial $5,000 contribution made in 2022 by the AFDCS, the world’s largest group specializing in the creation and collecting of first-day covers.
The AFDCS board approved the latest gift during the Great American Stamp Show in August.
“We plan a strong presence at Boston 2026, with meetings, seminars and a booth,” AFDCS president Lloyd de Vries said. “With as many as half a dozen U.S. issues being released at Boston 2026, those eight days will be an exciting time for first day cover collectors.”
First-day cover exhibiting will be featured at Boston 2026 as a International Federation of Philately (FIP) experimental class.
Boston 2026 will also feature a separate exhibition from the German Philatelic Society and the Federation of German Philatelists, according to an Oct. 20 press release announcing that the former society made an additional $2,000 donation to the show.
The members-only non-competitive joint exhibition will highlight material related to all areas of German philately. This will be the 14th joint exhibition that takes place every three years with a location alternating between the United States and Germany.
“I am very excited about the opportunity to exhibit and enjoy camaraderie among German collectors during the Boston 2026 show,” German Philatelic Society president Ken Gilbert said. “We are happy to assist the organizing committee in this effort with our donations. I have fond memories of my first international show, Interphil 76, in my home town of Philadelphia almost 50 years ago. So, I can’t wait for Boston!”
The German Philatelic Society publishes a journal, supports an extensive literature library and hosts regularly scheduled auctions. The society includes various study units, and there are local chapters in several states. More information is available online at www.germanyphilatelicsocietyusa.org.
The AFDCS has many active chapters, publishes an award-winning journal titled First Days, conducts an annual cachetmaking contest and more. Annual membership rates start at $24.
More information about the American First Day Cover Society is available online at www.afdcs.net or by writing the AFDCS at Post Office Box 57, Somerset, WI 54025-0057.
Boston 2026 World Expo will take place May 23-30, 2026, at the Boston Convention and Exposition Center. Show details and instructions to sign up for email updates can be found at www.boston2026.org and via the expo’s Facebook, X and Instagram pages.
