USPS recommends price increases for Priority Mail, other shipping services

On May 9, the United States Postal Service announced proposed price increases for shipping services that would take effect July 13, the same day the price of a first-class letter will rise from 73¢ to 78¢.

The changes, which have been approved by the Postal Service’s board of governors, must be reviewed by the Postal Regulatory Commission before they are scheduled to take effect.

“The changes would raise domestic shipping services prices approximately 6.3 percent for Priority Mail service, 7.1 percent for USPS Ground Advantage and 7.6 percent for Parcel Select,” the Postal Service said. “Prices are not changing for Priority Mail Express service.”

For example, under the proposed price changes for Priority Mail, the cost of a flat-rate envelope would rise from $10.10 to $11, a legal flat-rate envelope would jump to $11.20 from $10.40, a padded flat-rate envelope would increase from $10.85 to $11.95, a small flat-rate box would increase from $10.65 to $11.70, a medium flat-rate box would advance from $19.15 to $21.05, and large flat-rate box would jump from $26.30 to $29.95.

The cost for a large flat-rate box sent to APO/FPO/DPO addresses would increase from $25.05 to $28.70.
