Philatelic Foreword by Jay Bigalke

For a number of years now I have been collecting the 1936 American Philatelic Society convention cinderella label, and keeping it fairly quiet.

The label has a beautiful design and was printed by the American Banknote Company. Shown nearby is a close-up of a die proof of the label that I have in my collection.

Coming up at the Aug. 15-18 Great American Stamp Show in Hartford, Conn., I will have a one-frame noncompetitive exhibit on this label that will be in the special exhibits area.

I am also dedicating the exhibit to a friend of mine, Edgar J. Hicks (1947-2024), who recently passed. He also collected this cinderella and encouraged me to exhibit it someday. He was a force in philately and promoted all things Omaha, Neb.

In 2018 Hicks was the recipient of the APS Nicholas G. Carter Volunteer Recognition award for local promotion and service to the hobby.

The 1936 APS convention took place in Omaha, which explained his interest in the subject.

I sent a photocopy of the exhibit to him earlier this year, but I can only assume health reasons prevented a reply. I do hope he saw it, but I don’t think I’ll ever know for sure.

For those attending the show in Hartford, you’ll see the public debut of this exhibit. If there is interest, perhaps I will write a short feature article on the topic for an upcoming Scott Stamp Monthly magazine.
