Civil War 1864 stamps revealed

Two United States Civil War: 1864 commemorative forever stamps will be issued July 30 with first-day ceremonies in both battle locations. Details of the events have not been announced.

One stamp shows scenes from the Battle of Petersburg (June 16, 1864-April 3, 1865) involving the 22nd United States Colored Troops regiment at the beginning of the Petersburg campaign. The other stamp depicts David G. Farragut’s fleet at the Battle of Mobile Bay (Alabama) on Aug. 5, 1864.

The Battle of Petersburg stamp reproduces an 1892 painting by J. Andre Castaigne. The Battle of Mobile Bay stamp shows a painting by Julian Oliver Davidson published in 1886.

These new stamps continue the five-year series that started in 2011. The stamps will use the same double-sided pane format as previous issues in the series, with two stamps on one side and 10 on the other.

The pane includes quotes from Ulysses S. Grant, Jeremiah Tate, Harrie Webster and Howell Cobb, and reproduces lyrics from the Negro spiritual O Mary, Don’t You Weep.
