Single upright $2 Jenny Invert stamp to auction

A single upright $2 Jenny Invert stamp cut from a pane of six will be offered May 21 by Daniel F. Kelleher Auctions in Danbury, Conn.

The stamp was cut from the upper left corner of the 10th reported find of the intentionally created upright variety pane.

Stamp dealer Ross Wiessmann, who identified himself as the consignor, told Linn’s Stamp News that he discovered the pane in January and personally trimmed the stamp from the pane.

The Kelleher firm states that the stamp has its original gum and is “never hinged, Extremely Fine to Superb” and adds, “it would be difficult to find a nicer example.”

The firm described the pane as “the only examples to attain the grade of 95 by any expertising authority,” with certificates from the Philatelic Foundation and Professional Stamp Experts.

The stamp with selvage is estimated by Kelleher at $15,000 to $20,000, with an opening bid of $7,500.

Linn’s tally of the upright variety panes found to date is 17, of 100 created.

The United States Postal Service issued the Jenny Invert pane of six $2 stamps Sept. 22, 2013. The Postal Service revealed in October that 100 panes of six showing the airplane flying right side up were randomly seeded into the entire print run of normal stamps.
