Lyons wins single-frame championship

Feb 27, 2015, 2 AM

Larry Lyons was named the winner of the single-frame Champion of Champions award at the recent 2015 Ameristamp Expo in Riverside, Calif. The show, sponsored by the American Philatelic Society, took place Feb. 13-15.

Out of a field of 31 championship exhibits created by 27 competing collectors, Lyons was selected for his exhibit “America’s First Stamp Design, The United States City Despatch Post.”

His exhibit had previously taken home the single-frame grand award at APS Stampshow 2014 in Hartford, Conn., which qualified him for the annual championship competition.

His exhibit is a presentation of the different United States City Despatch Post adhesives from 1842 to 1846, with original research uncovering usage details and examples.

The government-operated carrier service was established in New York by order of the postmaster general in 1842. Lyons is the executive director of the Philatelic Foundation and the author of more than 140 original research articles.
