Monaco to celebrate Dante's 750th birthday on stamp

On April 9, Monaco's Office of Stamps will issue a stamp to honor the 750th birth anniversary of Italian poet Dante Alighieri, born in Florence in 1265. 

Dante's best-known literary work, the Divine Comedy, written in the early 14th century, remains a much-studied classic.  Many artists, composers, writers and even creators of computer games have been inspired to recreate scenes from this epic poem divided into three sections: Inferno, Purgatory and Paradise.

The stamp from Monaco shows a portrait of Dante on the right and winged angels on the left. The years of his birth and death are given as 1265 and 1321 in an inscription below the main design.

Monaco's Office of Stamps reports that Laure Fissore designed this stamp, and Elsa Catelin engraved it. It was printed in France in panes of six by a combination of the intaglio and offset processes.
