Louis DeJoy announced March 24 that he has resigned as postmaster general and chief executive officer of the United States Postal Service.

The surprise announcement comes a little more than one month after the USPS reported that DeJoy notified the Postal Service’s board of governors that it is time to begin identifying his successor.

“After four and half years leading one of America’s greatest public institutions through dramatic change during unusual times,” DeJoy said in a Feb. 18 news report, “it is time for me to start thinking about the next phase of my life, while also ensuring that the Postal Service is fully prepared for the future.”

Linn’s Stamp News reported in the April 7 issue that DeJoy had begun working with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to address reform within the U.S. Postal Service.

“After nearly five years as America’s 75th Postmaster General, and after informing the Governors in February of my intention to retire, I have today informed the Postal Service Board of Governors that today will be my last day in this role,” DeJoy said in a statement published March 24 on the USPS website.

“I shall cheer on … the 640,000 men and women of the United States Postal Service who I have called my colleagues and friends for close to five years,” DeJoy said. “It has been one of the pleasures of my life and a crowning achievement of my career to have been associated with this cherished institution, the United States Postal Service.”

In a statement published March 24 on the Postal Service website, Amber McReynolds, chairwoman of the board of governors, said, “Louis DeJoy has steadfastly served the nation and the Postal Service over the past five years. The Governors greatly appreciate his enduring leadership and his tireless efforts to modernize the Postal Service and reverse decades of neglect.”

The USPS reported March 24 that it has retained Egon Zehnder, a global leadership advisory firm, to lead the executive search for the next postmaster general.

“Egon Zehnder is one of the world’s preeminent executive search firms,” the USPS said. “The firm will work closely with the Governors to identify, evaluate, and select a forward-looking and effective leader to guide the Postal Service into its next chapter.”

While the search is being conducted, Deputy Postmaster General Douglas A. Tulino will serve as acting postmaster general, according to the USPS.

“There is no established timeline for the announcement of the next Postmaster General,” the Postal Service said. “The Board will continue to provide updates as appropriate.”
