From collectors to fathers: stamp-inspired Father’s Day gifts

Philatelic Foreword by Jay Bigalke
June brings with it a special holiday that touches collectors and families alike — Father’s Day. It’s a time when we pause to recognize the father figures in our lives who’ve offered guidance, support and love. For many, those early moments of learning to use stamp tongs, flipping through an old album, or listening to stories about a favorite cover came from a father, grandfather or mentor.
For collectors seeking a way to honor their fathers — or for fathers looking to pass on their love of stamps — there are countless ways to make this Father’s Day meaningful through philately. With this in mind, I thought it would be fun to suggest a short list of five stamp-related Father’s Day gift ideas.
1. A commemorative Father’s Day stamp collection: Curate a selection of stamps that celebrate fathers, families or strong male role models. Include a note about each stamp’s significance to make it personal. It would probably be quite interesting to see which stamps are selected and why.
2. A philatelic subscription or membership: Surprise him with a subscription to Scott Stamp Monthly, Linn’s Stamp News, or a specialized philatelic journal. A membership to the American Philatelic Society would also be fitting. This keeps the collecting spirit alive all year.
3. A framed stamp display: This one is interesting as stamp collectors aren’t as likely to have or buy something like this themselves, but would enjoy it. Choose a thematic collection (such as stamps honoring famous fathers, family scenes or a country he loves) and frame it for display. Or choose a specific stamp design and use that to make a framed poster.
4. A stamp album or catalog: Gift a Scott catalog or a vintage album that can spark both nostalgia and a deeper dive into the hobby. A digital subscription might also be a good option.
5. A stamp collecting starter kit for a new or returning collector: For a dad just getting started or reigniting an old passion, put together a starter kit with stamps, tongs, magnifier and a guidebook. Fathers could even gift this to other fathers to help pass along the joy of stamp collecting.
So, this Father’s Day let’s celebrate the fathers who have inspired us — in our lives or through their stamp stories — and pass on the love of philately to the next generation.
