Linn’s Stamp News and Scott Stamp Monthly managing editor Denise McCarty retired Oct. 3 from Amos Media Co. after a dedicated 43-year career. Future plans include visits to national parks and perhaps return trips to some of her favorites in Alaska.

Philatelic Foreword by Jay Bigalke

After more than 43 years as a writer and managing editor for Linn’s Stamp News and Scott Stamp Monthly, Denise McCarty has retired from Amos Media, the Sidney, Ohio, company that publishes Linn’s and the Scott stamp catalogs. Her last day was Oct. 3.

She joined Linn’s as a staff writer in April 1981 and was promoted to senior editor in March 1996. In January 2020, McCarty was named managing editor.

As managing editor, she was responsible for copyediting the company’s publications, writing news stories, and editing columnists. Her talents, though, went far beyond that by providing critical advice on news coverage, editorial topics and much more.

Her creativity has been showcased in Linn’s throughout the years with her worldwide new issues coverage and, most recently, by writing the topical column found near the end of Scott Stamp Monthly. And her humor shows with the October selection of forks as the topic for the column with a nod toward her retirement (“stick a fork in me, I’m done”).

“I started working at Linn’s shortly after graduation from college and have seen many changes in Linn’s, the stamp hobby and publishing in general over the years,” McCarty said. “My many memories include the wonderful people I have met and worked with during that time, plus many experiences, including publishing the daily issues of Linn’s during Ameripex ’86 in Chicago, attending many shows in New York City and other places around the United States and Canada, and traveling to England for a stamp unveiling in 1988.

“I will miss the people at Amos Media and the columnists that I have worked with, but I won’t miss the weekly deadlines.”

The editorial team and I wish her the best with all her future endeavors, especially her future trips to national parks, a personal interest of hers.
