Dollar-denominated stamps on large envelopes

“Nowadays, many modern United States dollar-denominated stamps are used on Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express parcels and other heavyweight packages,” Charles Snee writes in Dollar-Sign Stamps. “They are also used to pay pricer fees such as registry service.” Snee goes on to explore a more uncommon use: dollar-sign stamps on multi-ounce large envelopes. Two such covers are illustrated and described in the column.

Testing mystery items against research

In The Odd Lot this month, Wayne L. Youngblood highlights a most unusual cover featuring an overprinted cachet that is purported to be a parachute mail (paramail) experiment from Fort Campbell, Ky. According to Youngblood, the cover “came to me a few years ago as a complete mystery and has spent more than its fair share of time languishing in one of my is it something file folders.” Youngblood also pictures a companion cover that helped solve a mystery, while leading him down several rabbit holes.

Tip of the Week: modern Mongolia stamps

In this week’s issue, Stamp Market Tips columnists Henry Gitner and Rick Miller highlight the hot market for modern Mongolia stamps. “Virtually all Mongolian postage stamp issues from 2005 to 2015 are in strong demand and are selling briskly in mint, never-hinged condition at Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue value or more,” write Gitner and Miller. They also suggest looking for Mongolia stamps that have “topical as well as country appeal.”
