By Linn’s Staff
La Posta Publications publisher Peter Martin announced May 26 two award winners for articles appearing in issues of La Posta: The Journal of American Postal History published in 2024.
The 2025 Helbock prize for best postal history article went to James Weigant. His article “The Osage, Gray Horse, and Killers of the Flower Moon” weaves the story from the movie Killers of the Flower Moon with the history of the Osage Nation with the postal history of Gray Horse, Okla.
[Editor’s note: In the March 3, 2025, issue of Linn’s Stamp News, page 4, Jay Bigalke wrote about Weigant’s article and Osage postal history.]
Steve Kochersperger won the 2025 Charles A. Fricke award for the best article of three or fewer pages. His article “Llamas Deliver Mail in the Smoky Mountains” describes the use of llamas for delivering mail to LeConte Lodge, the highest elevation guest lodge in the eastern United States.
The top three finishers for the Helbock prize receive cash prizes, and the top two finishers for the Fricke award receive cash prizes. Award selections were based on voting by the La Posta editorial staff and subscribers of La Posta.
The Richard W. Helbock prize is named in honor of the founding editor of La Posta. Helbock began La Posta in 1969 and continued to edit the journal until his death in 2011.
The Charles A. Fricke award is named in honor of the longtime La Posta columnist who died in 2017 at the age of 94.
Now in its 57th year of publication, La Posta: The Journal of American Postal History is the leading journal devoted to American postal history. It is published four times per year, and subscriptions are $36 per year.
