Lunar New Year, Chisholm event details
Ceremony details for two commemorative stamps slated for issuance in January were announced by the United States Postal Service in late December.
The Year of the Horse commemorative forever stamp, part of the Lunar New Year series, is set for Jan. 15, in San Francisco, Calif. The ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco located at 750 Kearny Street.
The stamp features a painting of drums and celebrates the upcoming year of the horse. It is the seventh stamp in a planned series of 12, which began with the issuance of the 41¢ Year of the Rat stamp on Jan. 9, 2008.
The Shirley Chisholm commemorative forever stamp will be issued Jan. 31 in Brooklyn, N.Y. The event will take place at 11 a.m. at the Brooklyn Borough Hall, 209 Joralemon Street.
The stamp for Chisholm is the latest in the long-running Black Heritage commemorative series. Chisholm was the first black woman to serve in Congress and was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1972. The design, which has not yet been publicly revealed by the Postal Service, shows a painting by Robert Shetterly of Chisholm against a blue background.
Additional information about both events will be published in a future issue of Linn’s.
