March cartoon caption contest takes on military issues

Feb 26, 2025, 1 PM
The cartoon caption contest image for March is the 10¢ Soldier with Flintlock Musket Military Uniforms stamp (Scott 1565) from the Bicentenary of the U.S. Military Services issue released July 4, 1975.

U.S. Stamp Notes by John M. Hotchner

The military and its operations have been a major focus of news surrounding the recent change of presidential administrations in Washington, D.C. There has been no end of commentary by politicians and senior (mostly retired) military officers about the issues of readiness, training, sufficiency of equipment, operation of the military academies, and more.

But I wonder how the junior officers, enlistees and officer candidates are reacting to the changes being made and predicted.

So, given that a lot of Linn’s readers are military veterans, let’s use the Soldier with Flintlock Musket stamp (Scott 1565) shown in the box nearby as our cartoon caption contest for March. The stamp is one of four 10¢ Military Uniforms stamps from the July 4, 1975, Bicentenary of the U.S. Military Services issue.

It would be appreciated if responses could be more oriented toward issues than politics, but that might be too much to ask. I realize some entries may not be suitable for print, but all are welcome.

To enter put yourself in uniform and tell me what you might be thinking or saying about the military issues in play today, or about anything else on your mind, from the Postal Service and philately to sports, global warming, or how military uniforms have changed.

The best of the entries, one related to philately and one nonphilatelic, will be announced in this column. For each of the two winners, the prize will be a 13-week subscription to Linn’s (a new subscription or an extension).

To enter, write your caption (or captions) on a postcard and send it to me, John Hotchner, Linn’s Cartoon Contest, Box 1125, Falls Church, VA 22041-0125, or by email at jmhstamp@verizon.net. If you enter, it is essential that you include both an email and postal mailing address. Entries must reach me no later than March 21.

Why not enter now while you’re thinking about it?
