In October the United States Postal Service unveiled a new “prototype for retail locations.” Photographs of the unveiling, the lobby and the retail counter are shown nearby.

These photos of the Athens, Ga., post office, and the story about the new retail space prototype were published Nov. 20 in the Postal Service’s online publication, Link.

The article states that the “prototype space features upgraded retail counters and expanded self-service options.” It also touted other government services such as passports and fingerprinting, along with the new USPS Smart Lockers for package delivery.

From the photographs, the layout seems very straightforward with clear graphics pointing to where customers need to go for various services.

Regarding the retail counter, it is devoid of anything that looks interesting, except for the electronic signboards above. The signboards will be helpful with displaying the ever-changing postal rates, and hopefully they will be used to graphically showcase the current available stamp issues. I’m certain that would give the signboard and retail space a much warmer feel because stamps are integral to the U.S. Postal Service brand.

Next up on the renovation list for this prototype are retail offices in Waco, Texas, and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
