New U.S. money order design debuts in February

On Jan. 22, the United States Postal Service announced it is updating its money order design in February.

Security feature upgrades are at the forefront that make the legacy green money order harder for counterfeiters to fake.

The Postal Service states that the older design will continue to be used “until stock is depleted.”

The older green design has a U.S. mail eagle logo in the center while the new design has a QR Code that links to a “Check Money Order Status” tool found on the Postal Service’s website.

A watermark of Ben Franklin is on the older money order. On the latest issue, there is an image of a Pony Express rider.

Both money orders have a security thread on them.

“Both money order designs will be accepted at Post Offices and financial institutions as trusted forms of payment,” the Postal Service stated.

Money orders can be purchased only using cash or a debit card at post office locations. Current fees are $2.35 for a money order in the amount of $0.01 to $500 and $3.40 for amounts $500.01 to $1,000.
