October cartoon caption contest winner envisions Olympian method of pizza delivery
U.S. Stamp Notes by John M.
Hotchner
Only a dozen entries came in for the
October cartoon caption contest that featured the 1996 32¢ stamp (Scott 3087)
depicting the Discobolus statue. The stamp was issued for the centennial
of the Olympic Games.
A dozen is barely enough to keep the
contest alive, but the quality of the entries was high enough to pick winners.
In the nonphilatelic category, the
entry shown in the box on this page, from Harold Forbes of Castleton, Vt.,
takes the prize. Forbes’ winning line matches the action portrayed by the
statue emphasizing the service aspect of market competition in this country.
For the best philatelic entry Joshua
Kreitzer from Chicago, Ill., references the discus thrower’s skimpy wardrobe
with the line, “I probably should have asked to have my uniform shipped by
Express Mail.”
Both winners will receive a 13-week
subscription to Linn’s (a new subscription or an extension).
The best of the runners-up include:
“This will be the newest way to send
air mail if costs keep increasing!” by Merle Farrington of Medway, Mass.
“You think your back hurts? I’ve had
to hold this position for thousands of years!” from Mildred Barylski of
Warrenton, Va.
“I’ll be better dressed when I show
up for the ‘28 Olympics in LA.” sent in by John Barrera of Concord, N.C.
“Nude Frisbee — what’ll they think of
next!” by Joe Timko of Vicksburg, Mich.
“Does my gluteus maximus look big?”
sent by Rich Wolf, from Westminster, Md.
Thanks and a tip of the hat to all who entered. The next contest will be announced in the Dec. 9 issue of Linn’s.
