Peter Martin resigns; Albert Starkweather named ‘First Days’ editor
Albert W. Starkweather has been named editor of First Days, the journal of the American First Day Cover Society.
Peter Martin, the publication’s editor since the issue dated Jan. 15, 2011, resigned in February.
Martin previously led First Days as editor-in-chief from 2003 to 2006. He received the society’s distinguished service award last year.
”We appreciate Pete’s many years of service to the AFDCS, as well as the gold medals that First Days has won in literature competitions while he was Editor,“ AFDCS president Lloyd de Vries said on the society’s online news blog.
In a message to Linn’s Stamp News, Martin indicated that he had been working without a contract in recent years, and that efforts to agree on a new contract reached an impasse, leading to his resignation.
He is also stepping down as chairman of Americover 2015, the society’s annual show and exhibition.
“Pete leaves us in good shape on Americover,” de Vries said, “and other volunteers can continue work on the show.”
Martin told Linn’s he is working on a number of other projects, including “the much-anticipated Liberty Series cachet catalog.”
The final issue with Martin at the helm is dated January-February. It is the first issue on the society’s new publication schedule, which will see the journal issued six times a year instead of eight times a year.
The production change, a move Martin supported, was announced in his column in the December 2014 issue.
Starkweather is the longtime editor of Stamp Insider, which is published online six times a year by the Federation of New York Philatelic Societies, Inc.
He is also editor of The Ceremonial, the journal of the American Ceremony Program Society, and has been involved in writing and editing for numerous other publications.
“I’m pleased a veteran philatelic editor like Al is joining us,” said de Vries.
The American First Day Cover Society is a nonprofit organization devoted to the advancement and collecting of first-day covers.
Information about the society is available online, or write to AFDCS Central Office, Box 16277, Tucson, AZ 85732.
