The United States. Postal Service has issued two pictorial cancellations marking the renaming of the Fort Bragg, N.C., military base to Fort Liberty.

The June 1 postmark shown nearby from Fort Bragg, N.C., says “End of an Era.” The base released its Confederate namesake on June 2 during a ceremony with hundreds of veterans, dignitaries and military family members in attendance.

A June 2 Fort Liberty, N.C., postmark titled “New Beginning” honors the transition. This redesignation is a part of a larger U.S. Department of Defense initiative to rename military structures named after Confederate soldiers.

The North Carolina base was originally named in 1918 for Braxton Bragg, a Confederate general known for owning slaves, his quick temper and his combative personality.
