Aland Post concludes Chinese zodiac stamp series Oct. 23

Aland Post concludes its Chinese zodiac stamp series with an Oct. 23 souvenir sheet marking the Year of the Horse.

Prolific stamp designer and engraver Martin Mörck provided the artwork for the sheet, which contains a single €7.20 stamp.

Mörck depicted a stable in Aland where hyppotherapist (a therapist who uses horseback riding as part of treatment) Jeanette Eriksson offers equine-assisted therapy.

“The inclusive philosophy of the Aland riding school inspired me, allowing my creativity to flourish,” Mörck said in a release from the Small European Postal Administration Cooperation (SEPAC). “I placed the stables in the background and added a circular bridleway with, among other things, grazing horses and pheasants inside the circle. In this way, I could include different activities along the bridleway, creating both movement and depth. The zodiac series has been a long, wonderful project filled with challenges, creative solutions, joy, and passion.”

Mörck also provided the artwork for many of the previous issues in the series, including for the Year of the Rooster (Scott 389), Dog (402), Pig (414), Rat (427), Ox (439), Tiger (452), Rabbit (464), Dragon (478) and Snake (491).

Aland Post offers a specially designed album that provides an overview of the entire Zodiac postage stamp series. The 34-page album contains all 12 issues of the series housed in protective mounts, descriptions of each issue, and a presentation of Mörck and his inspiration.

The Year of the Horse sheet was designed by Johanna Finne and printed by Cartor Security Printers by 4-colour offset. The sheet measures 170 millimeters by 95mm, and the stamp in 60mm by 50mm with gauge 13 perforations.
