Canada Post proposes new postal rates
By Linn’s Staff
In a Sept. 6 press release, Canada Post proposed a 25¢ increase in its domestic letter rate to go into effect Jan 13, 2025.
Under the new proposal, the basic domestic rate for stamps purchased in booklets, coils or panes would increase from 99¢ to $1.24. The price for stamps purchased as singles would increase from $1.15 to $1.44.
The price of a domestic-rate stamp for letters weighing up to 30 grams varies in Canada depending on how the stamp is purchased; stamps purchased as singles cost more than those purchased in booklets, coils or panes.
Rate increases also were proposed for mail to the United States, international mail and domestic registered mail.
In its press release, Canada Post said the estimated impact of the rate increase on the average household would be $2.26 a year and about $42.17 a year for small businesses.
A public notice in the Sept. 7 issue of Canada Gazette, the official newspaper of the government of Canada, said: “These regulated rate increases would generate an estimated $78.4 million of additional gross revenue for Canada Post in 2025.”
The Canadian public was given 30 days to comment on the rate proposals.
