Innovative idea for booth fees at 2025 show in Germany

Nov 4, 2024, 8 AM
The Abria 2025 stamp exhibition, set to take place June 14-15 in Stendal, Germany, is testing a new idea for booth fees. The show honors the 500th anniversary of the Roland statue in Stendal that was featured on this 1987 German Democratic Republic stamp.

Philatelic Foreword by Jay Bigalke

One of the organizations I like to keep up with is the Federation of European Philatelic Associations (FEPA), which publishes a digital newsletter that largely reports on stamp exhibitions around the world.

In its Oct. 21 newsletter, they reported on the Abria 2025 stamp exhibition to take place June 14-15 in Stendal, Germany, with the headline “Innovative arrangement for dealer stands.”

The show’s main sponsor is auction house Andreas Schlegel of Berlin. The different arrangement concerns the show’s approach to the dealer, postal administration and auctioneer booths at the event. There will not be a stand fee; rather, at the end of the show participants with booths are being asked to pay a recognition fee appropriate to what they feel their revenue was during the show.

Innovative seems right but it would be interesting to learn more after the exhibition as to whether this approach actually works in netting more or less revenue than for a comparable show. The show’s sponsorship helps to offset some of the risk of this idea.

In the museum world, I believe some locations benefit more from donations rather than admission fees. But I don’t know how well this concept would work for a stamp show.

We would be interested in hearing your thoughts on the topic. Please email linnseditorial@amosmedia.com and let us know what you think about this show’s idea.

This exhibition is centered around the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the 1525 Roland statue in Stendal’s market square. The statue was featured on the 1987 German Democratic Republic stamp (Scott 2579) shown nearby.
