In a Nov. 7 press release, London’s Postal Museum announced the public sale of 50 limited-edition prints created and donated by prolific stamp designer David Gentleman (b. 1930).

Starting Nov. 7, the prints will be available for purchase online to the general public through the Postal Museum shop at https://shop.postalmuseum.org, while supplies last.

Gentleman is one of the most distinguished figures in British stamp design history, with more than 100 of his designs being issued from the 1960s to the 2000s. His work reflects a range of styles, including watercolor, wood engravings, graphic design and lithography. In 2022 Royal Mail celebrated his career as a stamp designer with a souvenir sheet (Scott 4202) depicting six of his more notable stamp designs.

“We are extremely grateful to David Gentleman for donating these unique prints,” said Postal Museum CEO Laura Wright. “All profits from sales will go directly to The Postal Museum helping us bring the story of the postal service to life for future generations.”

The limited-edition prints of London’s Mail Rail tunnels were created from sketches drawn by Gentleman when he visited the tunnels in 2015.

When the museum opened in 2017, London’s Mail Rail tunnels, an automated underground railway in London that once transported mail between sorting offices from 1927 to 2003, became a visitor experience.

Buyers can purchase a block of four images printed on heavyweight cotton watercolor paper, with each sheet signed and hand numbered; each sheet includes a certificate of authenticity. The print of four sketches is 48.1 centimeters by 40.4cm and is housed in a 53.1cm by 43.4cm portfolio printed by King and McGaw. The cost for each print with portfolio case is £450 (approximately $592).
