Successful Postcrossing meetup at Great American Stamp Show

By Jay Bigalke
Quite successful. That is how I would describe the Linn’s Stamp News Postcrossing meetup at the Great American Stamp Show in Cleveland Aug. 11.
It was the first meetup I had organized, and the first one I had attended. There were some seasoned veterans to Postcrossing gatherings and also newbies among the 40 of us who gathered.
A special thanks to Trevor Bills, an American Philatelic Society Young Philatelic Leadership Fellow, who assisted with passing out cards and explaining the workings of Postcrossing to the group.
Pictured nearby is the staged photo of all of us who gathered for an hour to sign postcards and prepare them for mailing from the show.
According to the Postcrossing website, “The goal of this project is to allow anyone to send and receive postcards from all over the world!”
After setting up an account, you can send postcards to random individuals around the world, and in exchange, you receive postcards back from different random people. The website provides further details about how this postcard-exchange system works.
Linn’s produced a meetup postcard and handed out almost 2,000 for free: half at the meetup and the others throughout the show.
I believe a number of the Postcrossing fans at the meetup had never been to a stamp show, and this event served as a catalyst to attend. Perhaps more meetups at stamp shows could help us introduce the stamp hobby to some of the more than 800,000 Postcrossing members in more than 200 countries.
