The Rocky Horror Picture Show honored in New Zealand May 7

By Linn’s Staff
On May 7 New Zealand Post (NZ Post) issued a vibrant set of four stamps celebrating British-New Zealander Richard O’Brien’s cult classic, The Rocky Horror Show. This issue coincides with the 50th anniversary of the 1975 film adaptation, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which has captivated audiences worldwide with its unique blend of science fiction, horror, and musical theatre.
The stamp set comprises four designs denominated $2.30 (domestic medium letter rate), $3.60 (domestic large letter), $4.30 (international medium letter) and $4.90 (domestic oversize letter) and a souvenir sheet of four se-tenant stamps of the same designs, all crafted by designer Chris Jones of Graphetti.
NZ Post defines medium letters as not exceeding 235 millimeters in length and 130mm in width. Large letters can be up to 235mm by 165mm, and oversize letters can measure 385mm by 260mm. Weight limits and thickness vary depending on the destination.
The individual stamps are offered in panes of 20 and are different from the souvenir sheet stamps.
Printed by Brebner Print, the stamps showcase iconic imagery from the musical, including the infamous red lips (in holographic foil on the souvenir sheet), the phrase “Let’s Do the Time Warp Again,” and characters like Dr. Frank-N-Furter and Rocky. The designs employ a striking black, white, and red palette, capturing the show’s bold and theatrical essence.
O’Brien, though born in England, spent his formative years in New Zealand from the age of 10. This connection adds a personal touch to the commemorative issue, highlighting New Zealand’s influence on his creative journey.
