World Stamps
Very timely aurora borealis stamps issued by Isle of Man
Philatelic Foreword by Jay Bigalke
For many around the world, the aurora
borealis has dipped further south than it has in recent years to give some
vibrant colors to the skies.
The Isle of Man Post Office decided
to partner with the Isle of Man Astronomical Society to promote astronomy on
the island.
Six new stamps, pictured here, were
issued Oct. 25 featuring photographs taken this year around the Isle of Man.
The stamps carry denominations of 85 pence (two stamps), £1.60, £2.31 (two
stamps) and £2.72. The stamps were issued in separate panes of 20 and also in a
prestige booklet.
What I find extra special is that
these stamps have also marked a moment for many of us around the world who were
able to experience the auroras locally.
The photograph of the aurora borealis
shown nearby is one I captured in my backyard in Ohio about a week ago. The
picture is not as spectacular as the stamp images, but the aurora borealis was
still colorful and cool to see.
