Philatelic Foreword by Jay Bigalke

The United States Postal Service’s The 2024 Stamp Yearbook was delayed slightly this year. Usually it’s released on the same day as the last stamp issue of the year (for 2024 the Winter Whimsy set of four on Oct. 10).

However, the book was available for preorder later in October with a Nov. 1 ship date, according to the U.S. Postal Service’s online store.

I continue to reminisce about the stamp yearbook being the gift my parents bought for me each year when I was growing up, which is why I write about the yearbook each year. The new 2024 edition is a great gift suggestion for the holidays.

The stories behind the stamps seem to be the thrust again for this year’s edition. The 64-page book has 8¾-inch by 11¼-inch size pages.

The yearbook includes 108 stamps and matching mounts from what the Postal Service calls its “collectible program,” or what collectors typically call commemoratives. The 2024 edition has 28 more stamps than last year’s book.

The yearbook sells for $112; an estimate of the face value of the included stamps is around $81.76 at the current 73¢ forever stamp rate (mount cost not estimated). It is for sale on the USPS Postal Store website. The item number is 992420.

The Postal Service is also selling a separate packet of what it calls “mail use” and “high value” stamps that are not included with the yearbook. This mail-use packet includes 44 stamps and mounts and is item No. 992404 at $37.95. The high-value packet is item No. 992406 at $45.95 and includes three stamps and mounts.
