APS names Kirk Gillis as next executive director

By Charles Snee
On July 2 the American Philatelic Society announced that Kirk Gillis, a former sales and marketing officer for the United States Mint, has been hired as the society’s next executive director.
During his time at the Mint, Gillis “led brand strategy, product development, e-commerce, and customer service for the numismatic and bullion programs,” the APS said. “Under his leadership, the Mint’s numismatic business grew by 50 percent over four years.”
Gillis, who begins his new role on July 14, replaces Scott English, who completed almost 10 years as executive director. English announced his departure in November 2024.
In November 2024, the APS formed a search committee chaired by outgoing APS president Cheryl Ganz. Mark Banchik also served on the search committee and will assume duties as APS president at the Aug. 14-17 Great American Stamp Show in Schaumburg, Ill.
“Kirk’s joining the APS as Executive Director will further our mission to serve the philatelic community,” Banchik said. “He brings skills and insights which will allow the APS to remain at the forefront of our hobby.”
Gillis is a U.S. Navy veteran with degrees from Texas A&M University and University of Rhode Island.
According to the APS, he helped form the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation and set up successful digital ventures in East Africa.
“I hope to draw from these experiences as I engage the philatelic community in a collaborative strategic planning process that will grow membership and ensure a vibrant future for the APS and philately overall,” Gillis said.
The APS said English will remain at the APS during a transition period that will conclude at the Great American Stamp Show.
“I’m happy to welcome Kirk to the APS team,” English told Linn’s Stamp News. “His background is just the right fit for this time. I’m looking forward to see the next chapter for the APS unfold under his leadership.”Connect with Linn’s Stamp News:
