A first-day ceremony for the United States commemorative forever stamp honoring rhythm and blues musician Allen Toussaint was held Jan. 30 in New Orleans, La., with much fanfare.

Linn’s article about the Toussaint stamp appeared in the Jan. 20 issue on page 12.

The well-attended first-day event took place at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz and Heritage Center.

Celebrity singer and songwriter Elvis Costello and Quint Davis, director of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, were among the participants in the ceremony.

“The United States Postal Service is deeply honored to dedicate a stamp to the incomparable Allen Toussaint,” said Gary Barksdale, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s chief postal inspector, who served as the dedicating official.

“His profound musical contributions have enriched the world with their soulful melodies and vibrant rhythms. The stamp serves as a lasting tribute to his extraordinary talent and enduring legacy,” Barksdale said.

The ceremony was hosted by Norman Roberts, a former journalist who served as the master of ceremonies. Other ceremony participants included vocalist Irma Thomas and Toussaint’s children, Clarence Toussaint and Alison Toussaint-LeBeaux.

“His music has touched the hearts and homes of so many, and now, through the release of a commemorative U.S. Postal Service stamp, his image will continue to inspire and connect with those same people in a deeply meaningful way,” said Toussaint-LeBeaux on behalf of the Toussaint family.

While autograph sessions are typically standard at ceremonies, no formal signing took place afterward.

The stamp features a photograph of the musician taken in 2007 by Bill Tompkins in New York City. The stamp was designed by USPS art director Ethel Kessler.
