USPS adds stamps for ‘Goodnight Moon’ and ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ to 2025 program
By Charles Snee
The United States Postal Service
announced Jan. 13 that it will issue stamps for the bedtime story Goodnight
Moon and the children’s animated series SpongeBob SquarePants.
Eight stamps illustrating pictures by
Clement Hurd from Margaret Wise Brown’s beloved children’s book will be issued
in a pane of 16. The pane includes a large label showing the cover of the book.
“First published in 1947, ‘Goodnight
Moon’ remains a favorite bedtime story for families everywhere,” the Postal
Service said. “By celebrating everyday rituals rather than fantasy, this iconic
picture book revolutionized children’s publishing.”
Postal Service art director Derry
Noyes designed the Goodnight Moon stamps.
Greg Breeding, also an art director
for the USPS, designed the four SpongeBob SquarePants stamps using artwork
provided by Nickelodeon, according to the Postal Service. The stamps are
scheduled to be issued in a pane of 16 featuring four of each design.
“The blend of humor, wit, and
absurdity in the Nickelodeon animated series ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ created by
Stephen Hillenburg has made it one of the most beloved television shows of the
21st century,” the USPS said. “These stamps will amuse and delight their
recipients, whether your card or letter is addressed to a house across town —
or a pineapple under the sea.”
As can be seen on the preliminary
image of a block of four, the two stamps picturing SpongeBob’s face are
slightly smaller than the other two stamps.
The designs of the Goodnight Moon and
SpongeBob SquarePants stamps are preliminary and might change, according to the
USPS.
“Additional stamps will be announced in the coming weeks and months,” the USPS said.
