New Glade Creek Grist Mill Priority Mail stamp Sept. 29

A new United States $5.75 Glade Creek Grist Mill stamp will be issued Sept. 29 in Danese, W.Va.

The high-denomination stamp pays the new domestic postage rate for the Priority Mail flat-rate envelope. That rate increased Sept. 7; the previous rate was $5.60.

No first-day ceremony is planned for the stamp, USPS spokeswoman Leisha Palmore-Drummond told Linn’s.

Ashton Potter printed 5 million Glade Creek Grist Mill self-adhesive stamps by offset in panes of 10. The stamps will not be automatically distributed to post offices.

The mill is located within Babcock State Park in southern West Virginia. Glade Creek Grist Mill was constructed in 1976 using parts of three different mills from the area to re-create nearby Cooper’s Mill, which was destroyed by fire in the 1920s. The new mill is used to grind flour and cornmeal, which visitors touring the mill can purchase.

Dan Cosgrove created the design depicting the mill in autumn.

Cosgrove has illustrated all of the Priority Mail and Express Mail stamps issued by the USPS since 2008. The Scott catalog has categorized this stamp series with the title “American Landmarks.”

Glade Creek Grist Mill was previously shown on 34¢ and 37¢ stamps (Scott 3608 and 3743) issued in 2002 as part of the Greetings from America sets of 50. The stamps in the two 50-stamp panes each represent a different state.

Press sheets, both with and without die cuts, will be available in a quantity of 500 of each type for the new Glade Creek Grist Mill stamp. Each press sheet will consist of six panes of stamps and sell for the face value of $345.

Asked if a Glade Creek Grist Mill Priority Mail stamped envelope is in the works, Palmore-Drummond replied, “There are no plans for a stamped envelope with that design at this time.”

First-day cancel ordering information

Standard ordering instructions apply. Collectors requesting first-day cancels are encouraged to purchase their own stamps and affix them to envelopes. The first-day cover envelopes should be addressed for return (a removable label may be used), and mailed in a larger envelope addressed to Glade Creek Grist Mill Stamp, Postmaster, Box 9998, Danese, WV 25831-9998.

Requests for first-day cancels must be postmarked by Nov. 28.
